[잉배랩 Issue 4] overlap, overlay, superimpose 

반도체, 표시장치(LCD, LED 등) 관련 특허에서는 ‘덮다, 겹치다, 포개다, 중첩하다’와 같은 표현이 상당히 자주 등장하고, 이에 대한 영어 단어로 overlap,

overlay, superimpose가 사용된다. 

‘덮다, 겹치다, 포개다, 중첩하다’는 그 말이 그 말 같지만, 영어 단어는 아래 그림과 같이 구별되므로 단어 사용에 있어서 주의할 필요가 있다.  

‘overlap’은 대상들이 부분적으로 겹칠 때 사용한다. 그림에서 H와 W가 겹친정도에 있어서는 차이가 있지만, H와 W가 겹쳐 있는 상태이기 때문에 overlap를 사용한다.  

(En)  His sweater overlaps the top of his pants.  

(Ko)  그의 스웨터가 바지 윗부분을 덮는다.  

(En)  My research overlaps with his.  

(Ko)  내 연구는 그의 연구와 공통되는 부분이 있다.  

(Ko)  게이트 전극(124)은 반드시 게이트선(121)으로부터 돌출한 모양을 갖는것은 아니고, 후술하는 소스 전극(173) 및 드레인 전극(175) 사이에 위치하는산화물 반도체층(154)과 중첩하는 게이트선(121)의 일부일 수도 있다. 

(En)  The gate electrode 124 does not necessarily protrude from the gate line

121, and may be a portion of the gate line 121 overlapping an oxide

semiconductor layer 154, which is disposed between a source electrode 173

and a drain electrode 175 and will be described later.

‘overlay’는 한 대상이 다른 대상을 ‘온통 뒤덮을 때’ 사용한다. 그림에서 layer A가 layer B와 완전히 덮고 있고, 손수건 같은 것이 바위에 완전히 얹어져 있다.

(Ko)  나무 바닥 위에 카펫이 깔려 있다.

(Ko) 화산재로 뒤덮인 지역

“superimpose’는 포개놓다, 덧붙이다의 의미로, 두 개 이상의 화면을 중첩시켜단일 화면으로 할 때, 화면내의 특정한 위치에 특정의 상(像)을 정확히 중첩시키거나 또는 삽입할 때 사용된다.   

(En)  Software on the server identifies and translates the text, sends the English words back, and superimposes them on the screen.  

(Ko)  서버에 있는 소프트웨어는 그 문자를 판독하고 번역해서 영문으로 다시보내 주는데 이 영문은 화면 위에 겹쳐서 뜬다.

 실제 특허 번역에서 사용된 ‘overlap, overlay, superimpose’의 사용 예를 보면, 이들 단어를 적절하게 사용하는데 어려움이 없을 것이다. 

(Ko)  식각 방지막(165)의 가장자리와 중첩하도록 소스 전극(173) 및 드레인 전극(175)이 산화물 반도체층(154)의 제2층(154b) 위에 서로 이격되어 위치한다. 

(En)  A source electrode 173 and a drain electrode 175 are disposed on the

second layer 154b of the oxide semiconductor layer 154 such that they are

spaced apart from each other to overlap an edge of the etching preventing

layer 165.

(Ko) 도 3을 참고하면, 서비스 오버레이 네트워크를 구성하는 MCU(120~420)는 각각 인터넷 상에 기 개발된 응용 서버들 중 적어도 하나의 응용 서버(130~430)와 연결될 수 있다.

(En)  Referring to FIG. 3, the MCUs 120, 220, 320, and 420 constituting the

(Ko)  레이더 도표는 여러 측정 목표를 함께 겹쳐 놓음으로써 각 항목 간의 경향을 쉽게 알 수 있는 장점을 가지고 있다.

can be easily noticed because several measurement targets are

superimposed.
