‘~앞에/~앞쪽”에 대한 영어 표현으로 ‘in front of’와 ‘in the front of’ 2가지를 생각할 수 있다. 정관사 the가 있느냐 없느냐의 차이인데, 그 쓰임새가 전혀 다르다. 잘못 사용하면 엉뚱한 의미가 될 수 있다. 예를 들어 보자.

위의 예들을 통해서 ‘in front of’와 ‘in the front of’의 차이를 어느 정도 이해할수 있을 것이다.

다음, 특허번역에서는 어떻게 구별되어 사용되는지 몇 가지 예를 더 보면

‘in front of’와 ‘in the front of’를 올바르게 사용하는데 어려움이 없을 것이다.

단, 국문에서는 ‘앞’과 관련된 대상들이 별개인지 여부가 명확하게 드러나지 않으므로, 도면을 통해서, 또는 해당 장치에 대한 사전 이해를 통해서 확실하게이해해야 한다.
